Never turn away from a woman in need

When one is aware of a human rights situation that is tricky and a reaction might cause anger, it is very easy to walk away. Although it is makes for tense moments, I encourage all women and men to never turn away from a situation IF someone is being emotionally or physically harmed. Tread carefully, but do not ignore. I’ve created a number of very tense situations by intervening, but never regretted stepping up. Although I was not successful in every case, I always felt that one success was worth it. And, as I grew older (and hopefully wiser) I rarely confront in an angry manner, but instead, try to encourage the women to make change in their reactions to the situation. Then I make an attempt to reason with the person causing the problem. The most surprising response I have received is when dealing with an Arab man about his sisters. After calming chatting with him, he looked at me and said, “I agree with everything you have said, Jean.” My heart lifted in joy. THEN, he looked at me sweetly and said, “Yes, I agree, but I like it like this.” You could have pushed me over with a feather! To KNOW something is wrong, and then say you know it but you like it like that!!!! I felt the weight of the world on my heart at that moment.
